Enhance Your Outdoor Paradise

Enhance Your Oklahoma Outdoor Paradise

Although Oklahoma’s weather can get a little wild from time to time, it also offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy it. Whether it’s warm summer evenings and mild winter afternoons or blue skies and gorgeous sunsets, there’s no better way to enjoy Oklahoma’s finest days than from the comfort of your own outdoor paradise.

No matter what your backyard or front lawn looks like–or if you even have much of one–there are endless possibilities for making it the perfect place to sit back and relax any time of year. With the right changes, your outdoor area can be just as functional and easy to maintain as it is beautiful, all while increasing your home’s living space as well as its value and curb appeal.

Oklahoma Landscaping: Hardscapes and Softscapes for Year-Round Enjoyment

An expanse of open, rolling green lawn in your backyard may be beautiful, but it doesn’t offer much usability during inclement or less-than-pleasant weather. For more functionality, consider adding some hardscapes that can help you enjoy your outdoor area year-round. Covered patios are a great way to get you and your family outside while staying comfortable and provide the perfect place for things like fire pits, outdoor kitchens, heaters, and seating. Additions like lighting, and ceiling fans, as well as strategically placed walls or foliage to block the wind and create privacy, can make a dramatic improvement in your comfort and keep your outdoor area usable no matter what the Oklahoma weather throws your way.

If problems with your soil, drainage, or elevation currently prevent you from adding hardscapes, some smart landscaping can help correct your outdoor area and prepare it for improvements. Retaining walls, for example, not only beautify your space, but they also manage the grade of your yard, reducing ponding and erosion during heavy rains. Fixing uneven areas or adding strategic flower beds can extend the life of your outdoor area, while things like sidewalks, paver pathways, and accent lights can keep it accessible and easier to navigate even when it’s muddy or snowy.

Lawn Beauty: Flowers and Lawn Care for a Vibrant Outdoor Oasis in Oklahoma

Visual aesthetics are crucial when creating a perfect outdoor oasis, and nothing adds more beauty to an outdoor area than healthy, vibrant foliage. Irrigation and proper lawn planning can help ensure you have a lush lawn that stays green as long as possible and stays healthy and well-kept during winter dormancy. Thoughtful seasonal planting and flower bed rotations can keep your outdoor area colorful even during Oklahoma winters while potted plants can be used to define spaces on a patio and camouflage outdoor electrical equipment.  Don’t have the space for dedicated flower beds? Consider hanging baskets, climbing vines, or vertical gardens that affix to a wall.

Your outdoor area is essentially its own ecosystem, and you can enhance it by working with the environment you have instead of trying to create one where your grass and plants will struggle to thrive. Native plants and grasses require little maintenance but can pack a big punch. Not only can they survive well in Oklahoma’s fluctuating temperatures, but many serve to attract pollinators, birds, and wildlife, while others can be effective in repelling pests. Similarly, when choosing turf varieties, consider factors like foot traffic, soil conditions, water availability, and dramatic seasonal swings.

Effective Weed and Pest Control for Your Oklahoma Lawn

Unfortunately, the great outdoors also comes with a great many pests and pesky weeds, and Oklahoma certainly has its fair share. All it takes is stepping on an infamous goat head sticker or an early clover bloom for your outdoor paradise to become a plethora of problems.

Tackling weeds early prevents them from spreading, siphoning important nutrients from your grass and turning your lush lawn into a homely hodgepodge of invasive grasses. However, successful weed control requires more than just the occasional spraying. To keep your outdoor area looking its best, you need a comprehensive weed control plan that includes soil testing, fertilization, and both pre-emergent and post-emergent treatment.

You also want to keep your outdoor paradise from becoming plagued by pests. Correcting poor drainage problems can help reduce your mosquito population, while keeping trees and plants properly trimmed back can prevent ticks from invading. Keeping pests in check can also limit their destructive impact on your lawn, buildings, trees, and flowering plants.

As with weed control, you need precise, consistent, and proactive treatments to reduce or even eliminate problematic pests, and treatment needs to address the problem at its source. The pests invading your outdoor paradise are choosing it for a reason, such as standing water or overgrown areas. A customized pest control plan can help get rid of the pests you have and keep them from coming back.

Seasonal Decorations and Care: Enhancing Outdoor Aesthetics in Oklahoma

As the holiday season rolls around, you can take your outdoor paradise to a whole new level with professional Christmas light and décor installation. And, in Oklahoma, you can even sit outside and enjoy it for much of the winter, thanks to mild temperatures and infrequent snow events, so consider going beyond the traditional red and green to extend that sparkling spirit. Tree wrapping and light-sensing timers add a sense of elegance and extravagance, while heavy-duty extension cords, professional-grade light bulbs, and high-quality hanging clips ensure your decorations will be able to withstand Oklahoma winds.

Best Time to Aerate Cool and Warm Season Grasses in Oklahoma

Maintaining a beautiful lawn is crucial for property owners, whether it’s for aesthetic or functional purposes. Aeration is a vital lawn care practice that creates small holes in the soil to promote the growth of healthy grass roots. In Oklahoma, the best time to aerate varies depending on the type of grass. This article will guide you on the optimal time to aerate cool and warm season grasses in Oklahoma for improved lawn health.

Best time to aerate cool season grasses in Oklahoma:

Cool season grasses such as tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, and perennial ryegrass are prevalent in Oklahoma. They grow actively in the fall and spring, while their growth rate slows in the summer months. Aeration should take place during the fall, between late August and early November. Aerating during this period enables the grass to recover and develop deeper roots before the winter season sets in. Avoid aerating during summer months as it can cause grass stress and potential damage.

Best time to aerate warm season grasses in Oklahoma:

Oklahoma has several types of warm season grasses, including Bermuda grass, Zoysia grass, and buffalo grass. These grasses grow vigorously in the hot summer months and become dormant in winter. Late spring or early summer, between late May and early July, is the best time to aerate warm season grasses. Aerating during this period enables the grass to recover and develop deeper roots before the hot and dry summer months set in. Avoid aerating during the fall and winter as the cooler temperatures can cause grass stress and damage.

Lawn aeration is crucial for maintaining a healthy lawn, but the timing of the aeration process is essential for optimal results. In Oklahoma, the timing varies based on the type of grass you have. For cool season grasses, aerate in the fall, while warm season grasses should be aerated in late spring or early summer. At TurfWorks, we provide the best aeration services to meet the unique needs of your lawn. Contact us today to schedule your lawn aeration service and improve the health of your lawn.

Unlock Your Lawn’s Lush Potential: Simple Steps to Green Glory

Eager to transform your patchy grass into a lush carpet of green that’s the talk of the town? It’s not as elusive as you might think. With just a bit more dedication and a sprinkle of elbow grease, you’ll be on your way to a thriving lawn that’s not just surviving but flourishing.

Let’s dive into some foolproof lawn care strategies that’ll make your neighbors peek over the fence in awe. These insider hacks are straight from the playbook of Oklahoma City’s lawn whisperers, the pros who wage war on those pesky weeds and come out victorious. Ready to get the scoop? Let’s roll up our sleeves!

Banish Weeds Like a Boss

Spotting a weedless wonder of a lawn is rarer than a unicorn sighting, but don’t fret. Kick things off by showing those intrusive weeds the door. Yank them out, roots and all, with your trusty hands or grab a weeder tool and get down to business. The goal is a clean slate, free of unwelcome green squatters.

Thatch? Dispatch!

If your lawn’s thatch layer is puffier than a marshmallow, it’s time for some tough love. A half-inch or more means it’s dethatching o’clock. You can go old-school and do it by hand, rent the right gadgets, or call in the cavalry (a.k.a. a professional lawn crew). Whichever route you choose, say adios to that dead grass and hello to breathing room for your lawn.

Let Your Lawn Breathe

Oklahoma City lawn lovers, listen up! Aeration is like a spa treatment for your soil. It’s all about punching tiny holes in the dirt to let air, nutrients, and water mingle with the roots. This VIP treatment helps loosen up packed soil, spurring on robust growth and putting the brakes on weeds and diseases.

These tips might be bite-sized, but they pack a punch in the lawn care department. And if your green space demands some extra TLC, don’t hesitate to call in the pros.

One squad that’s got the chops is TurfWorks. Covering all of Oklahoma City and the surrounding burbs, they’ve got the magic touch for lawn care, fertilization, and keeping those weeds in check. Fancy a no-strings-attached quote? Contact us today. Here’s to a year-round, picture-perfect turf!

Irrigation and Oklahoma

Maximizing Your Irrigation System During Hot Weather

Dealing with the hot temperatures as of late, you may be wondering if your irrigation can keep up with the lack of rain and hot temperatures. Well, let’s take a little time to discuss your irrigation system.

First off, during drought conditions, always remember that your irrigation system was designed to supplement water to your lawn, not be the only source of moisture. This is, to some extent, why it may take longer watering times to deliver the moisture necessary to keep you turf green and your plants happy.

The easiest way to extend watering times with the current program is to use the seasonal adjustment setting on your modern timer. It will adjust all of the times for all of your zones in one simple step. (How to video HERE)

The next step is taking a little time to make sure your plants are getting enough water. Your bedding plants will be feeling the pressure from the lack of rain and high temperatures, but most species and especially established woody plants can be kept looking pretty good during these times of drought with a little supplemental watering. Just keep an eye on them to make sure they don’t look wilted from under or over watering.

As far as turf is concerned, make sure to keep enough water on any parts of your lawn that are Fescue. Any Fescue that dies is dead forever. Fescue will not go dormant like Bermuda and bounce back after it receives adequate moisture. In this respect, taking care of Fescue has a bit of a steep learning curve. Some die back will be inevitable year after year, however, with proper over-seeding, preferably slit seeding, each fall you should be able to easily replace Fescue that has died from normal attrition. Moving on to Bermuda, you’ve got a little easier task. Currently, most Bermuda lawns without irrigation are definitely showing some areas of dormancy. To bring Bermuda out of dormancy only requires consistent, substantial watering. On most lawns with typical irrigation systems we would recommend starting with 30 minutes on rotor zones for each area of Bermuda in full sun. Your watering can definitely come down some once we start to see cooler temperatures and substantial rainfall later this summer or early fall. Additionally, sandy soils that are unable to hold moisture may need even more water, or unfortunately, be unable to support Bermuda without watering at least daily.

If you have additional questions about maintaining your landscape during these inhospitable conditions, feel free to give us a call at 405-494-6020 or fill out our contact form here. We have irrigation technicians available to diagnose and repair your irrigation and get your lawn and landscape watered efficiently.
